The latest course in Dubai, and the first at the ambitious Dubai Sports City project, is also the first to be designed by Ernie Els. Having won the Desert Classic here on numerous occasions there was inevitability that Els and his design team would put their name to something here eventually, and what an intriguing course they have come up with. Outstanding service and immaculate playing surfaces are taken as given in Dubai, but here the similarities end. The course can best be described as a Desert Links; ie all the features of a links course but in a desert setting. So what you have for example are holes that flow through sand dunes topped with wispy sea grass, but that are created from the desert and not the sea. Thankfully there are 5 different tee boxes (lets face it who wants to play a 7500yard golf course anyway) with generous landing areas and large undulating greens. This allows play for all abilities however the run offs around the greens will test your short game to the limit. The clubhouse is a temporary structure that would put to shame even the grandest ones in the UK, with the real deal opening in mid 2009. Add in a Butch Harmon Golf Academy and excellent practice facilities and you end up with a very impressive set up, and a course that should now be top of your list to play.
