Golf holidays in South Africa

South Africa

It may come as a surprise to some, but the mountains, forests, coasts and deserts of the ‘rainbow nation’ have made it one of the most exciting and varied golf destinations on the planet. And with the tiny time difference, friendly people, year-round warmth and a favourable exchange rate, it makes a surprisingly refreshing change. Cape Town, Durban and the Garden Route are dotted with fantastic courses such as at the fabulous Fancourt Resort, which can be topped off with a safari in Kruger National Park for an action-packed trip. On the course, weave your shots between ancient trees, over cliff top gorges and along dramatic coastlines, ending the day with a sunset cocktail at your luxury hotel. And of course, twinned with a safari, beach or wine tasting break, you couldn’t ask for more.

Sun City is the leisure and entertainment resort that is home to two fabulous golf courses. The Gary Player Country Club is home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge in November and is regularly voted number one in South Africa. It winds its way through the mature bush and back towards the clubhouse, and culminates in a great risk reward par 5 over water. You have to keep it straight here, and if you do, you will be rewarded with great playing surfaces. The Lost City Course is carved out of the undulating, rocky terrain, that makes it look like a desert course. The outstanding holes are the 9th and 18th that come back to the clubhouse after skirting the big water hazard in between. The 13th hole features a water hazard full of live Nile crocodiles, making this one of the most exciting golf courses in the world.
