Travel writer Dave Balow says he'll stick to Supertravel after debacle of his 'cheap' holiday

Travel writer Dave Balow says he'll stick to Supertravel Supertravel’'s flagship chalet Montana in Courchevel Travel writer Dave Balow says he'll only choose Supertravel in future A chef was busy preparing the fabulous gourmet meals

As a newspaper travel editor and experienced ski writer, DAVE BALOW has been a guest at most of the top winter sports resorts in America, Canada and Europe. Now retired, he has to pay, like the rest of us, for his annual Alpine adventures. Two years ago, looking for a bargain, he chose a cheap holiday . . . and paid the price. So much so, that he needed a week at Supertravel’'s flagship chalet Montana in Courchevel last season to get over the experience.

AS I sat in front of a crackling log fire in the warm embrace of a plush red velvet sofa, glass of chilled Champagne in one hand and a caviar loaded cracker in the other, my mind went back to a scene one year ago.

Then, as now, I was in a chalet about to start a week’'s holiday. On both occasions there was plenty of snow and the weather was great. But there the similarity ended abruptly.

This time, despite the economic gloom, I had decided to splash out on a trip to the French Alps that wouldn’'t leave me feeling thoroughly piste off!

We all know that in life you generally get what you pay for. But never before had this been brought home with such force when contrasting last year'’s cheap and not so cheerful week in the Austrian resort of Obergurgl with seven days of sheer bliss in Courchevel with Supertravel.

     On our '‘budget break'’ we

arrived at Chalet Christophorus in the Austrian Tyrol and my wife and I were shown to our double room. True, there were two beds in it, but there the epithet '‘double'’ vanished without trace.

The room was no more than a narrow hallway that had been blocked off, a door inserted and a couple of uncomfortable iron single beds shoe-horned in.

After hanging our coats in what passed as a wardrobe, the rest of our clothes ended up in piles on the floor. The overworked chalet staff didn’'t seem too concerned that our ‘'cell'’ was not up to expectations and even tried to convince us that we would grow to like it.

"Lovely views sir"”, said one of them, reminding me of Monty Python’s' Dead Parrot sketch. “"The views have nothing to do with it"”, I replied, "“this double room is deceased and should never have been put in the brochure in the first place".” Judging by the noise downstairs, our fellow guests had no such problems.

And no wonder. For the Mad Jocks ski tour had just begun... and the dozen or so kilt wearing, whisky-slugging clansmen from north of the border had begun as they meant to go on - with a barrage of dubious out of tune ditties that contained more four letter words than a John Terry memoir. Sleep was out of the question.

Contrast all this with my arrival at Supertravel’'s luxurious flagship

Montana Chalet in Courchevel 1850 in January. After settling in to one of the most comfortable bedrooms you could imagine, it was downstairs for a steam and hot tub in a delightful private spa area before relaxing in front of the fire for cocktails and canapes with a select, well behaved group of fellow guests.

A top young chef was busy preparing the first of a string of fabulous gourmet meals and selecting the fine wines to go with them, while attentive chalet staff catered for all our needs.

These ultra high standards were maintained throughout a memorable week confirming all that I had been told about Supertravel.

Value for Money

Of course, it is easy to compare a bargain basement holiday with an expensive one. But never before has the contrast between the two made me realise that you might as well spend that bit extra and make sure you get value for money.

I'’ll be sticking with Supertravel from now on as they have four more top notch chalets in Courchevel, six in Zermatt and eight in St Anton, and can arrange ski trips to suit all pockets anywhere in the world.

After 25 years of travel writing I can confirm that when it comes to skiing you really do get what you pay for.
