A dream come true for Elinor Lewis

A mother's ultimatum to her ski-mad daughter: You can be a chalet chef - as long as it's with Supertravel!

A dream come true for Elinor Lewis Elinor Lewis loved the skiing A mother's ultimatum to her ski-mad daughter You can be a chalet chef - as long as it's with Supertravel!

For Elinor Lewis, things all fell into place when she was just 12. It was her first holiday in a Supertravel chalet in the lovely Chalet Seeberger of St Anton.

She loved the skiing, she loved the chalet, she loved the food – and she loved the idea of spending all season in a fabulous ski resort. ‘That’s when I knew that at some time I just had to spend some seasons working in a chalet – for Supertravel,’ said Ellie.

It took a little while for that to happen of course. There was the little matter of going to school for a few more years. But Ellie’s dream came true when she succeeded in getting a job as a chef at Supertravel’s luxurious new collection of chalets in Zermatt.

She has just completed her first season with the company and she says she’s loved every minute.

‘I’ve got a university place waiting – I plan to do fine art at Central St Martins, part of the University of Arts London – but I knew I had to spend some time in the mountains first.

Ellie, whose artistic tastes embrace the Pop Art movement as well as the penetrating portraiture of Lucian Freud, admitted ‘My parents were happy for me to put off going to university for a while – as long as I got a job with Supertravel!’

     It had to be Supertravel,

explained Ellie, because once the Lewis family had experienced a holiday with the company they were hooked. ‘Once we went to Chalet Seeberger, that was it for us,’ Ellie said. ‘We went there every year from when I was 12 to when I left school. We all absolutely loved it and my parents wouldn’t even think of going with another company. And I thought the idea of working in a chalet was so cool.’

And has the experience been as cool as she expected? ‘Every bit,’ said Ellie. ‘I did my pre-season training in Courchevel and was then assigned to Chalet Furi in Zermatt as chef. And the moment I arrived in Zermatt I absolutely fell in love with it. It is just so pretty – I felt as if I was entering Santa’s Grotto as soon as I got here.

‘It was just so ridiculously lovely seeing all the horse-drawn sleighs waiting at the station to pick people up from the trains and take them to their hotel. I can’t imagine anywhere being more beautiful – especially with the fabulous Matterhorn towering over everything.’

FROM AN EARLY AGE

Ellie has loved skiing for as long as she can remember – she started at the age of three. Although, as her family like to remind her, it could be said to be

earlier – her mother went on a skiing trip when she was expecting Ellie. But her first trip to Chalet Seeberger sparked a great interest in cooking for Ellie. ‘We thought Wayne, the chef there, was so good and we all fell in love with him,’ she said. ‘And after that I started doing Prue Leith after school cookery classes.’

In Chalet Furi Ellie was cooking for four people – ‘a real luxury to be cooking for that number’, she said. Her calves liver with horseradish mash, crispy bacon and buttered green beans receives wide acclaim and her pan-fried red snapper with Mediterranean salad is another favourite.

‘We have a Supertravel cookbook to give us ideas and to fall back on, but we also have great leeway to introduce our own ideas, which is great,’ said Ellie. And is the future in the kitchen or at the canvas? ‘Definitely another year at least in the mountains,’ said Ellie. ‘I enjoy it so much, and Zermatt is such a wonderful place – it’s the real Switzerland. Everyone takes such pride in their community – and that extends to the gorgeous pistes too, they are so well looked after. At the moment I can’t think of anything better than cooking and cruising the runs under the Matterhorn!’
