From the Vineyard
to the Alps

At Supertravel the wines are specially selected

How we select your wine, from the vineyard directly to your chalet dining table…

At Supertravel the wines are specially selected From the Vineyard to the Alps Tasting at Supertravel's offices The taste test

The days of litre bottles of any old wine from the cash and carry down in the valley have long gone! Chalet holidaymakers of a certain age may remember when some holiday companies were happy to treat their guests to Chateau Plonk of that ilk.

At Supertravel the wines served are specially selected to delight the palate – even for guests who have enjoyed a couple of après-ski vin chauds or beers beforehand.

We go to huge lengths to make sure that the chalet wines are of high quality and that they complement the food superbly. And the only way to do that is to visit the vineyards and taste the wine to make sure it is right for our guests.

Heading up our team for this task is specialist wine distributor Sam Owens, who has an expert knowledge of both the producers and, just as importantly, the special requirements of guests in an Alpine environment.

The selection process for one season begins even before the previous season has ended. ‘I have

a detailed brief of what is needed, quantities and so forth, and early in the year I head out to France to have a good ferret about with the producers I know and trust and return with a shortlist of wines which I think will fit the bill,’ said Sam, whose wine company is called Le Verre Gourmand.

‘At one point I take Supertravel executives to the vineyards themselves so they can talk to the producers and get first hand experience of what goes into making a good wine and get a feel for the types of wines that will be suitable for their guests. Last year we visited Burgundy, home of Macon-Villages, St Veran and Pouilly Fuisse. We were taken out into the vineyards, which was fascinating and very educational.

The challenge in selecting wines for chalet guests is making sure there is something for everyone, said Sam. ‘The key is versatility, wines that will match the various food served during the week, with a mixture of proven classics from traditional producers while

also introducing some more contemporary, modern styles,’ he explained.

At the final tasting at Supertravel’s offices in London, the wines had been whittled down to eight whites and eight reds. At the end of the tasting, a list remained of three of each – all of which we are sure will please our guests.

THE TASTE TEST

And finally, Sam went out to the resorts before the season started to guide chalet staff through a comprehensive tasting session. ‘The idea is that the staff can get to grips with some background information on the wines,’ said Sam. ‘They need to know all about what they are pouring for the guests. My aim is to bring the wines to life for them, so the chalet hosts can share their knowledge with the people on holiday and increase their enjoyment of what are some excellent wines.’
