Rob Freeman meets June and Roy

Rob Freeman meets June and Roy, chalet hosts with a lifetime of experience…

Rob Freeman meets June and Roy The perfect blend Chalet hosts with a lifetime of experience Time to celebrate

At dinner time in his chalet, Supertravel host Roy Chaffey has a few specialities – and we’re not talking about the edible variety.

His Dinner Jacket is admired, his Bishop’s Mitre always wins applause but his Sydney Opera House – well, that brings the house down. For Roy is the acknowledged master of the novelty napkin and many guests are so impressed they leave his creations untouched all through the meal.

‘He gets the compliments and applause, but it’s me who’s cooked a delicious three-course meal,’ says his fellow host – and wife – June.

Roy and June have proved big hits as Supertravel’s most mature chalet host team, looking after guests superbly in the delightful and atmospheric Chalet Taja in St Anton.

‘It was our first time in St Anton and the season has been fantastic,’ said Roy. ‘Some people might think it’s unusual to have chalet hosts who are grandparents – but many guests say how much they like being looked after by, how shall I say, mature staff.

‘And we had one group who were worried that they might

disturb us if they came in late after a night out. But they were fine once they knew we didn’t mind them making a noise – and that we had sometimes got in only just before them!’

June described how easily they had fitted in with the, by and large, much younger Supertravel staff in St Anton. ‘They are such a good team and we’ve been included in everything. We ski with them on our day off – we ski as much as possible, fitting in with our duties in the chalet of course. We have been just part of the gang.’

TIME TO CELEBRATE

One of the highlights of the season was the couple’s 44th wedding anniversary – an unusual celebration in the life of a chalet girl and chalet boy! ‘We had a wonderful romantic candle-lit meal on our day off in a pizzeria near our chalet,’ said June.

June, 65, used to work in Gloucester as an administrator in the NHS and Roy , 68, was a builder. ‘We were keen skiers and we found ourselves for many years arranging ski holidays for groups of friends, sometimes up to 40 people,’ said June. ‘It was after

staying in a chalet on one occasion that I thought, this is what I want to do when I retire from the NHS.

‘The first year after retirement I worked in a chalet for the winter while Roy stayed at home. Then he joined me the second year and we found we worked together well as a team. I can cook and I’ve always been an organiser and Roy is great with people as a host – the perfect blend really.’

Roy adds: ‘June is the cook, but I do great canapés – and my speciality is bread and butter pudding.’

The couple have three daughters, aged 40, 37 and 35 (one of whom is in Australia and in regular Skype contact with June and Roy) – and six grandchildren, eleven, nine, seven, six, four and two.

After a summer in England seeing their large family and looking after their large garden, June and Roy’s plans for this winter are fixed – they will be back in St Anton, at Chalet Taja helping to give Supertravel guests the time of their lives.

And Roy is busy working on some exciting new napkin creations – watch this place setting!
