Originally a 13th century monastic retreat, or "cloister", Klosters is a peaceful resort tucked away at the end of the picturesque Prättigau valley in eastern Switzerland.
Klosters-Serneus has a population of around
4,000 and as such the resort is a medium-sized Swiss alpine village. The buildings are mainly traditional in style with a number of smart hotels, restaurants and watering holes, clustered around the railway station and main Gotschna cable car.
Klosters remains a smart resort and essentially
a discreet place undisturbed by the mass market tour operators.
The village lies around 1200 meters above sea level and can be reached from Zürich by road in under two hours or by train in a little over that.
The final stage on the Rhätischebahn railway up
the Prättigau valley is a delight in itself.
Its neighbour Davos is the largest mountain
holiday resort in the Alps and with the fast tunnel connection to the Engadine valley, Klosters has magnificent opportunities for families seeking active holidays.
Klosters-Davos skiing region offers an extensive winter playground for skiers, snowboarders, cross country skiers and snow shoe walkers. With its 5 mountains featuring 300 km of slopes divided in 85 descents, Davos Klosters Mountains lists amongst the biggest snowsport regions of the alps.
The beautifully groomed piste network, accessed
from either Klosters or Davos, is served by some 60 lifts including mountain railways and cable cars. The pistes vary in difficulty with predominantly intermediate terrain, but the black runs and the wealth of off-piste skiing for the more advanced make this an exciting resort for all. Given the sheer size of this area, you may find yourself alone on many of the long trails through the trees in search of that distant hamlet or "Schwendi" where a Glüwein awaits!
The 12 kms marked run from the Weissfluhgipfel to Küblis on the valley floor is one of the longest in the Alps and takes you on a journey from high rocky peaks across alps through forests down to the lower meadows dotted with wooden chalets and barns.
Night skiing available on Saturday nights at
Parsenn, Davos Snowboarders will love the Sunrise Snowpark on Jakobshorn with rails, two kickers, rolls and a quarterpipe. In the centre of the park is the Nidecker Monsterpipe - one of the best pipes in the world.
If you are seeking the extra thrill, there is
enormous potential for off-piste skiing. The longest itineraries stetch to around 18 kms. Guides can be arranged on request.
Cross country skiers will enjoy stunning scenery with around 100 kms of marked trails in the region. A popular alternative is snowshoe walking.
For non-skiers there are well marked and
prepared winter footpaths and walks, horse drawn sleigh rides and toboggan runs. A great experience and fun for all the family is the 8.5 kms toboggan run from Madrisa to Saas. There is also the steeper, perhaps more exhilarating 4.1 kms run from Gotschnaboden to Klosters!
Klosters has a sports centre with artificial open-air ice rink with ice-skating and curling, tobogganing, snow-shoe trekking, horse-riding and sleigh rides.
If this is not enough to impress the non skier,
then make full use of the excellent train links to St. Moritz or the beautiful medieval quarter of Chur for a day trip, the Bernina Express is one of the most picturesque train journeys in Europe and the glass ceilings make the journey even easier to enjoy. s.
The trip over to Davos is simple and is the
highest city in Europe, with its 4,000 resident
