Mammoth Mountain is traditionally among the first ski areas to open and sometimes operates as late as the Fourth of July. Emphasizing its unrestrained feel, Mammoth receives over 400 inches of snow annually with an average of 300 sunny days a year. The mountain is surrounded by the protected backdrop of Mt. Whitney and Yosemite National Park.
Amongst this natural beauty, the town meets
the mountain to create a distinctive and welcoming area for visitors and locals alike. There are 3,500 skiable acres to play on with a vertical drop of 3,100 feet and 150 named trails. There are 29 lifts in place, including two gondolas and two high-speed six-packs.
Rising to an impressive 11,000 feet, Mammoth is one of America's largest ski areas with 3,500 acres of skiing. It has a very long season - from November until sometimes July - and has amazingly consistent heavy snowfalls. And it is definitely a places to go for steep and deep skiing. However, skiing in Mammoth is not just exclusive preserve of experts - the ski school has won accolades for its programmes and the beautifully groomed cruising runs make this an excellent resort for beginners and intermediates. Its terrain parks are some of the best you will find anywhere.
Mammoth is, as its name suggests, large. Situated in California, the nearest gateway airports are Los Angeles or Reno in Nevada, so it is easy to combine a skiing holiday with other activities such as gambling or visiting Disneyland.
Mammoth Lakes is attractively set amongst the
trees and where most of the accommodation is situated. It is full of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops and being an all year round resort gives it a welcoming, lived-in feel.
The skiing has more than enough to offer all
standards and the pistes are immaculately groomed. Powder bowls and steep chutes can also be found if you're more adventurous.
If you feel you have skied out Mammoth you can always ski its sister resort, June, which is just down the road.
If this isn't enough on Fridays and Saturdays you
can ski under the floodlights or explore one of the extensive snow mobile trails. Children's facilities are excellent.
