Full Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Cape Town

The first thing to do after arriving in Cape Town is to collect your hire car. De Waterkant House, where you stay, is ideally situated on the lower slopes of Signal Hill, a short walk from the stylish Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and minutes from Cape Town's beautiful beaches and historic centre. It makes an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful city.

Accommodation: Standard De Waterkant House

Day 2: Cape Town

Your first day is free for you to explore the wonders of Cape Town, and its surrounding areas. Good-looking, fun-loving, sporty and sociable. If Cape Town was in the dating game that's how her profile would read. The Mother City of South Africa occupies one of the world's most stunning locations, with an iconic mountain slap-bang in her centre. As beautiful as the surrounding beaches and vineyards can be, it's the rugged wilderness of Table Mountain, coated in a unique flora, that grabs everyone's attention and you can ride to the top by cable car.

Accommodation: Standard De Waterkant House

Day 3: Cape Town

Another memorable day to continue your exploration of this great city. There is superb shopping and eating at the stylish Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, stunning beaches on which to relax, plush Camp's Bay with its stunning modern buildings, and trips to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for so many years. And the lovely Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens with its wonderful displays of tropical plants and flowers, is not far outside the city.

Accommodation: Standard De Waterkant House

Day 4: Cape Town to Hermanus

This morning you will drive out of Cape Town and travel on to Hermanus where you will stay for the next two nights. Here you can enjoy a spot of whale watching from the seaside city centre. Hermanus is simply the best place in the world to whale watch and you can also admire the panoramic ocean views from the edge of the cliffs. Whale watching season is from June until November.

Accommodation: Standard Les Baleines

Day 5: Hermanus

Spend today getting to know this quaint town, and surrounding areas. Hermanus lies on the Western Cape close to the most southerly point in Africa. It is a major tourist destination because of the whale watching but it is also a popular seaside town with South African holidaymakers as it retains an air of the small fishing village it once was. There are lots of established festivals and events to keep the town buzzing and you can go on a township tour, sea-kayaking, wine-tasting and even cage diving with Great White Sharks on nearby Dyer island.

Accommodation: Standard Les Baleines

Day 6: Hermanus to Oudtshoorn

After breakfast today you drive on to the Klein Karoo area for your first night at De Opstal Country House in Oudtshoorn. This is a must stop on the Garden Route and there are plenty of things to see and do while staying in the town. One option today is to drive out to the stunning Swartberg Pass.

Accommodation: Standard De Opstal Country Lodge

Day 7: Oudtshoorn

Today you can choose from more of the activities that the Klein Karoo area has to offer. Spend time at the Cango Caves and have fun on the Cango Wildlife Ranch, then you can ride one of the big birds at the famous Oudtshoorn Ostrich Farm and get up close to the reptiles at the nearby Crocodile Farm.

Accommodation: Standard De Opstal Country Lodge

Day 8: Oudtshoorn to Knysna

Continue your journey today towards Knysna. One of the best hotel locations in Knysna, the four-star Protea Hotel Knysna Quays, where you will be staying for the next two nights, enjoys spectacular views over this popular coastal town and is within the Waterfront area, another of the must stops along the Garden Route. And be sure to try some of the renowned local oysters.

Accommodation: Standard Protea Hotel Knysna Quays

Day 9: Knysna

Spend the day exploring this beautiful, scenic stretch of coast along the Garden Route. You will find a bustling waterfront, magnificent trails and activities to suit everybody. Knysna stands out thanks to the limestone cliffs that dramatically separate its tranquil lagoon from the pounding surf of the Indian Ocean. It's also home to the country's largest indigenous forest. Hop aboard the Outeniqua Choo Choo for a steam engine ride through the scenic highlights. The Millwood Mines at Jubilee Creek, site of a major gold rush in 1885, provide a picturesque spot for a picnic.

Accommodation: Standard Protea Hotel Knysna Quays

Day 10: Knysna to Kariega

After breakfast, leave Knysna and head towards Port Elizabeth and onwards to Kariega Safari Lodge. Enjoy morning and evening game drives exploring the sights and sounds of the wild. You will see all the wildlife and vast bird life from the comfort of a 4x4 and in the company of an informative and professional ranger. Overnight at Kariega.

Accommodation: Standard Kariega Main Lodge

Day 11: On Safari

Today you can go out on more morning and evening safaris from the lodge, with every chance of seeing the Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino - and during the hot part of the day relax and soak up the sun around the pool at the lodge and enjoy a picnic in the lush gardens. Once again, professional rangers will be on hand to help you identify all the animals and birds during the safaris.

Accommodation: Standard Kariega Main Lodge

Day 12: Depart Port Elizabeth

Today you make your way from Kariega to the big city of Port Elizabeth, where you will drop off your hire car at the airport. The Garden Route tour comes to an end today, but you may want to stay on in Port Elizabeth for a few days before catching an onward flight and continuing your African adventure or beginning your journey home.
