This week-long tour of Thailand takes in the buzzing capital of Bangkok, the infamous Bridge on the River Kwai and the beautiful Golden Triangle region where Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. It's a great way to get a sense of Thailand's landscapes, architecture and history, and would make a great add-on to a longer stay, as well as being an unforgettable holiday in its own right.

Full Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Bangkok

Today you'll arrive in Bangkok, to be met at the airport by your tour representative and taken to your hotel in the city. Once you've settled in, you'll meet your tour leader and the rest of the group for welcome drinks and a briefing, then the rest of the evening is free for you to explore the city.

Day 2: Bangkok

Today you'll visit some of the highlights of this bustling city, including the Grand Palace, former residence of the royal family and home of the magnificent Emerald Buddha. You'll also get the chance to experience a massage at the famous Wat Pho massage school. In the evening, you'll explore the atmospheric night markets and try the delicious cuisine.

Day 3: Bangkok to River Kwai

Today you leave Bangkok and travel through spectacular rainforest to the town of Kanchanaburi, where you'll stop for half a day at the unforgettable Elephant World sanctuary. This is no tourist attraction but an authentic insight into rural life; a place where sick, old or abused elephants receive rest and care. You will help feed the elephants and perhaps even swim with them in the river. Afterwards, you'll continue by road and boat to a peaceful riverside tented resort, arriving in time for sundowners by the river and a swim in the natural rock pools.

Day 4: River Kwai to Kanchanaburi

Today you'll head to the infamous Hell Fire Pass to visit a museum which tells the story of the POWs who died while building the Burma-Siam Railway. At Tham Krasae you'll board the "Death Railway" train and travel through lush forests before crossing the Bridge on the River Kwai and arriving in Kanchanaburi. Here you'll visit one of the excellent war museums and the poignant Allied War Cemetery. Dinner tonight is either at your hotel or at one of the riverside restaurants.

Day 5: Kanchanaburi to Chiang Mai

Today you'll travel east towards Ayuthaya, once one of the most significant cities in Asia, where you'll visit some of the World Heritage-listed temples before transferring to Bangkok Airport for the short flight to Chiang Mai. This walled city boasts more than 100 religious buildings, and is known for its silverware, silk products and carvings. This evening you'll join a foodie tour of the local markets, tasting specialties such as Khanom Jeen Naam Ngeow, handmade noodles in curry served with fresh vegetables, as well as pad thai and the local sausages.

Day 6: Chiang Mai

This morning's tour begins at the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Centre, before a visit to the 14th-century Wat Chedi Luang, and on to Warorot Market, where you'll find everything from clothes and textiles to fruit, herbs, flowers, vegetables, insects and even fireworks. You'll enjoy a cooking class and eat the fruits of your labours for lunch. The afternoon is free for you to explore or just relax by the hotel pool.

Day 7: Chiang Mai

Today is a free day to enjoy Chiang Mai and its surrounds. Speak to your guide about the possiblities that this charming part of Thailand has to offer. In the evening enjoy a farewell dinner with your group.

Day 8: Depart Chiang Mai

As the tour comes to an end, a private transfer will take you to the airport for your onward travels.
