It also has a fascinating ecological story that is woven into the history of a peaceful and family oriented culture. And on this tour you will have lots of time to relax as well as explore.

Full Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive San Jose

On arrival at San Jose's Juan Santamaria International Airport you will be met by one of our tour representatives and taken to your hotel in the city. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and it is located in the Central Valley of the country. The diversity of restaurants and places to visit and the superb museums make San Jose a great place to start your adventure in Costa Rica. Relax after the journey then go out and explore on your own sampling the buzzing nightlife.

Day 2: San Jose to Tortuguero National Park

Leave the city early and head for the Tortuguero area on the North Caribbean Coast. On the way pass through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, where you can admire beautiful waterfalls. This is a flora and fauna sanctuary covered by an emerald-green mass of vegetation. Stop for breakfast at a restaurant in Guapiles then at the local pier a boat will be waiting to take you to Tortuguero along sheltered jungle canals. After lunch at your lodge visit the Tortuguero village where you can experience how people in the Caribbean area live.

Day 3: Tortuguero National Park

Today you explore the secondary canals of this natural paradise and get closer to nature. A network of channels and navigable lagoons that crosses the park from southeast to northwest provides the chance for you to take a close look of the biological diversity of this region and observe the impressive green macaw, the oriole Montezuma, numerous species of waterfowl and fresh water turtles. You can also take the optional turtle-watching tour during the evening to watch massive sea turtles arriving to lay their eggs on the beach.

Day 4: South Caribbean-Puerto Viejo De Limon

After breakfast in the lodge, the journey continues with a boat ride back to the local dock where a rental car is waiting for you to use for the rest of the trip. Your next stop is the small Caribbean village called Puerto Viejo, located south from Limon City. The region has a unique combination of beaches, natural resources and Afro Caribbean culture. Local people are open and friendly and the town of Puerto Viejo is perfect to experience the country's Caribbean flavours. You will stay at a hotel here for the next two nights.

Day 5: Puerto Viejo

After breakfast at the hotel the rest of the day is at leisure. The South Caribbean area is rich in culture and activities: snorkeling, boat tours, dolphin-viewing, canopy tours, turtle nesting, kayaking, just to name some of the optional activities. You can relax on golden sands on the magnificent jungle beaches or walk through the peaceful fishing village with its typical Caribbean architecture of small colourful wooden houses. Don’t forget to try the exotic cuisine while listening to the rhythms of the local music.

Day 6: Puerto Viejo to Arenal

After breakfast continue on your own to the Northern area of Costa Rica, home of the famous Arenal volcano. Driving time from Puerto Viejo to the Arenal area is around six hours, although you can take it at your own speed to admire the scenery as travel through different cities or towns such as Limon, Guapiles, Sarapiqui and finally Fortuna. You are booked for a two night hotel stay in the Arenal volcano area where the scenery is stunning.

Day 7: Arenal Volcano

A day at leisure to visit any of the different optional attractions offered in the area on your own, such as the beautiful Arenal Volcano National Park, La Fortuna Waterfall, Canopy, Hanging Bridges or you can just relax and enjoy nature pursuits from your hotel. Also in this area, you will be able to experience a different type of forests and the different ecosystem habitats while all the time enjoying the spectacular views of this great volcano which draw tourists from all over the world.

Day 8: Arenal Volcano to Monteverde Cloud Forest

After breakfast you will be driving on your own heading up to the Cloud Forest area in Monteverde. Roads in some portions are gravel and a little bit bumpy and dusty but this is a beautiful sightseeing drive bordering the Arenal Lake with great views of the mountains and the volcano. After check in at your hotel in Monteverde, where you will be staying the following two nights, take your time to wander around the area and discover the different attractions that are available.

Day 9: Monteverde Cloud Forest

Today is free for you to enjoy some of the optional activities in the area such as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, Sky Walk, Sky Trek, Coffee Tour, Frog pond, Serpentarium and Trapiche tours. The highlands of the cloud forests of Monteverde are a special area for the lover of adventure with class and style. Small settlements devoted to agriculture and livestock have made this area the heart of the country. Great bird watching here and the climate is mild.

Day 10: Monteverde to the beaches

Today, you continue discovering Costa Rica as you will be driving to your selected beach destination, for a three night stay at a super resort hotel. Beaches in Costa Rica are known worldwide, especially for their great combination of jungle and pure white sands. This is the perfect place to relax and spoil yourself. Sunsets are spectacular and there is a whole range of fun activities to keep you occupied day and night if you have the energy.

Day 11: Beach Resort

You've covered quite a chunk of this beautiful country and now it's time to relax for a couple of days and reflect on all that you have seen and done. Soak up the tropical sunshine around your hotel pool or on one of the lovely beaches or take shelter under a shady palm and enjoy a good book. Depending on your choice of resort you will be spoiled for things to see and do around your hotel and there are lots of tours on offer if you want to explore some more.

Day 12: Beach Resort

Another uninterrupted day in paradise for you to relax and top up that tan. Again plenty of activities on offer, including hikes, cycle tours and horse riding excursions into the forests and along the beaches if you get itchy feet. Tonight try one of the many restaurants for a change and sample some of the spicy local dishes that have a distinctive spicy Caribbean flavour. This beach break is perfectly timed as your Discover Costa Rica tour nears its end.

Day 13: Return San Jose

After breakfast today and possibly a final swim or shop for souvenirs at the resort, you begin your drive back to San Jose, which, depending on your beach hotel location should take you around five hours. You will be staying the last night of the tour at a hotel in the capital city. Take your rental car back in the afternoon then enjoy more of the sights and sounds of this lively city trying one of the many restaurants and sampling more of the nightlife.

Day 14: Departure

Today your wonderful 14 day Discovery tour of the central American country of Costa Rica comes to an end. Possibly time for some more sightseeing or shopping for souvenirs before you head to the international airport to continue your holiday or catch your flight back home taking with you so many memories from this beautiful part of the world.
