Located in the south west of Mexico’s largest state of Chihuahua, the Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon) system is a rugged wilderness area with a maze of 200 interlocking gorges that combine into five massive interconnected canyons. It is at least seven times the size and 1,462 feet deeper than Arizona’s Grand Canyon and on this marvellous six day tour you will get great views of this natural wonder. This almost inaccessible canyon system was not even fully documented until 1986. The area is the home of the Tarahumara Indians, with whom you will certainly meet, and they still live much the way that they have for thousands of years.

Full Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Chihuahua

On arrival in Chihuahua, you will be met by one of our tour representatives and taken to the San Felipe el Real Hotel right in the heart of Chihuahua’s Historical Centre. The house was built in the 19th century and it is decorated with period furniture. It has only six suites, all of them different and all located around the lovely central patio. It also has a kitchen-dinning room and a little library making it a simple but charming place to stay.

Accommodation: Standard Rate San Felipe el Real Hotel

Day 2: Copper Canyon

Today you will be taken to Chihuahua railway station to begin your journey through the Copper Canyon. On arrival in Divisadero, check into your hotel, the Cabanas Divisadero Barrancas where you will stay full board for the next two nights. This was the original hotel in the area and sits on the rim of the canyon with magnificent views. The hotel is quite rustic, meals are taken with other guests and evening entertainment is generally a guitar player by the open fire. There are plenty of tours into the canyon which can be booked from here.

Day 3: Copper Canyon

You are free today to relax or take one of a number of tours into and around the stunning copper and green coloured canyons and the rivers that cut through them on their way to the Sea of Cortez. If you want to stay closer to home, the hotel offers complimentary walking tours to the Tarahuamara Caves which are about 40 minutes away and are well worth a visit.

Named in honour of an impressive 300-year-old Jesuit Mission in the picturesque village of Cerocahui, Hotel Mision is in a high fertile river valley of apple orchards and vineyards surrounded by the Sierra Madre. You travel to the hotel along a picturesque mountain road. Unusual rock formations and beautiful streams make the 35 minute journey memorable. Across the street from the hotel is the historic old Mission Church, with the original altar dating back to the mid-1700s still intact.
