Established as a hotel in 1820, The Bellevue Syrene sits resplendent in the heart of mystical Sorrento, on Italy’s sparkling Amalfi Coast. A mere 6-minute walk from Sorrento Cathedral and a 15-minute walk from the Museum Correale, this timeless beauty is built on the ruins of a majestic Roman villa, overlooking the wonderful Gulf of Naples. In an area that has inspired artists and poets across the centuries, it perches regally atop of a vertiginous rock face set against the backdrop of Vesuvius, a burst of sugary-sweet pastel hues in the midst of the grass green cliffside and gleaming sapphire sea. The Bellevue Syrene can be easily reached by car or boat from Naples.

Spa

Expert, Pina Gagriulo, who is on hand to help guests wind down after a day exploring the bustling Amalfi Coast, leads the Bellevue Syrene’s Wellness Centre. As well as fully decked out gym, the spa area has a wonderful hammam and offers a full range of body treatments, facials and massages. Designed in true Romanesque style, it’s a great place to step away from the day-to-day.

Room Description

Guestrooms at The Bellevue Syrene are a grand affair of Italian elegance. There are 50 luxurious rooms to choose from, all of which offer an old school charm that speaks to the history of the space. Light, airy and entirely chic, interiors are a mix of modern nuances and traditional design. Bright white dominates the spacious rooms while sharp blues, soft mint and parma violet accents and rich upholstery complement exquisitely. Fresh cut flowers, crystal chandeliers and antique furniture are standard. Sea view balconies bring the staggering coastline inside, and bathrooms are a delight, with classic marble, whirpool tubs and a bevvy of La Source bath products. Luxe living areas and king size beds offer respite and all mod cons are provided. The Pompeiani Suite is a nod to the imperial age with its Pompeian style frescos, and the Roccia Suite is built into an ancient grotto, and is home to a large spa-style in-room pool, which provides stunning vistas to sea.

Activities

Sorrento has no shortage of cultural heritage to explore. A wander into town along narrow, cobbled streets will have visitors swooning over flower-laden balconies and the wonder of the region’s art and architecture. Visit the 15th-century Duomo and 14th-century Church of St. Francis with its tranquil cloister for a true sense of place. The café-lined Piazza Tasso is a wonderful afternoon coffee spot. The Bellevue Syrene has private beach access and a sun-dappled deck with a dip-pool, for those who want a more sedate moment. There’s also a calm, well-stacked library, and the Dali Cigar Room provides chess and board games along with your cheroot. Staff will happily arrange boat trips along the coast, a great way to experience the views back to the colourfully peppered cliffs of Sorrento, though do keep an eye out for the mythical mermaids said to be swimming in the bay…

Dining

Amid the glory of the Sorrento skyline, The Bellevue Syrene has two gourmet restaurants; La Pergola is perfect for the summer months with it’s panoramic terrace, while Gli Archi is known as the winter restaurant. Chef Salvatore Buonocore leads the kitchens, where local ingredients are used to make the most delicious homemade plates. Mimmo Jocice, dedicated to the first Neapolitan photographer is a good shout for breakfast, though the Club Lounge lays on complimentary savoury bites and sweet treats throughout the day. A poolside snack corner will see you in good stead, and there are a host of eating options to try out along the Sorrento’s harbour.
