Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole

Breathtaking resort with cult status and some of the most famous saloons in the West

This iconic resort in Wyoming has, in the view of many, few equals as a top-notch ski destination - and now it has the best of both worlds, with fabulous runs on a truly awesome mountain as well as stylish upscale accommodation.

This is big country skiing, unspoiled and in a fabulously atmospheric remote location - yet with the convenience of an airport just minutes away.

Visitors have the choice of staying in the Wild West town of Jackson itself, with a real cowboy feel, or out at Teton Village, at the base of the slopes. The Four Seasons Resort at Teton Village is sophisticated and arty with a wonderful health club and pool, while the Wort Hotel is bang in the middle of Jackson and oozes old-fashioned 1940s' charm.

There's no doubt that Jackson Hole is one of the most exciting resorts in the world for expert skiers and boarders - it has cult status and the Rendezvous Mountain sector has almost nothing but black runs. Head for the East Ridge and you can look down the infamous Corbet's Couloir - and decide if you have the bottle to leap in.

But fear not, Jackson has wonderful cruising runs for intermediates and there are fine beginners' slopes. Apres Vous Mountain is the place for more gentle runs - although it does boast some blacks in Saratoga Bowl.

A popular day's excursion is to Grand Targhee, about an hour or so away by bus, which is famous for its powder slopes.

Jackson has a number of off-slope attractions you'll find nowhere else - such as Yellowstone National Park, just 60 miles away, guided walks by the Snake River to spot eagles and moose and the chance to see the largest herd of elk in America at the nearby National Elk Refuge.

The town's full of authentic-looking saloons (with real swing doors!) - the Silver Dollar Bar in the Wort Hotel has thousands of silver dollars inlaid in the bar and in the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar the bar stools are western saddles and a lively hoe-down is always on the cards.

Stiegler’s Restaurant

Stiegler’s Restaurant

"Join us tonight to find a little Gemütlichkeit” That’s the motto of Stiegler’s Restaurant, referring to the feeling of being somewhere with warmth, friendliness and good spirits, usually typified by good company and food. Unsurprisingly, that is exactly what you can expect to experience when you dine here

Featuring a range of continental fare as well as plenty of traditional Austrian dishes, you’ll find plenty to whet your appetite including veal, pork and wild game favourites perfect for trying something new. Homely food delicately presented on your plate is the calling card of Stiegler’s and helps to strike the fine balance between family and gourmet restaurant, which combine for a thoroughly enjoyable visit. The Bratwurst Fest is an option that most fail to turn down and nobody regrets.

The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

A far cry from your usual night out, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is no ordinary watering hole, this is the true Wild West. Kitted out in a western cowboy flare motif, with a large collection of western memorabilia, animal mounts and genuine saddle barstools, you’d be forgiven for thinking Clint Eastwood could walk through the door at any moment.

Located in the heart of Jackson, the bar is renowned for its live entertainment, especially it’s almost-nightly swing dancing to country music which ensure there’s a truly authentic feel to the place. This is only furthered by its unique architecture and the almost constant requests for a certain Jack Daniels. Four pool tables are scattered about the bar if you fancy a game, competitive or otherwise, you’ll find it easily.

If you enjoy your visit here so much, you can even take home some of the bar’s very own beer in a unique, decorative wooden case.
