St Moritz

St Moritz

The glitzy and stylish Swiss resort where wintersports holidays all began

Picturesque, magisterial and dripping with style - that's St Moritz, one of the world's most glitzy, fashionable and exciting ski resorts.

The skiing in this Swiss resort, in the remote Upper Engadin valley, is as five-star and beautifully groomed as many of the fabulous hotels in town.

St Moritz has a breathtaking lakeside setting - where at times during the winter you can watch polo on ice, show-jumping, greyhound racing, golf or even cricket!

This is an all-round winter resort with as much going on off the slopes as on them. As well as the eccentric happenings on the frozen lake there are numerous gourmet and music festivals, streets full of designer shopping, trendy bars and clubs, and an amazing 150-kilometre network of winter walking trails.

There is even a whole mountain, Muottas Muragl, devoted to non-skiing activities such as snowshoeing and tobogganing. The new swimming pool centre also contains fabulous spa facilities, and you can paraglide, play indoor tennis or try curling.

If you're feeling very brave, there's the chance (booking well ahead of time is necessary) of testing yourself on St Moritz's most famous feature, the Cresta Run. For about £425 you can have five rides (helmet and full protective equipment included) on a skeleton, head first from St Moritz to Celerina. Do be careful on Shuttlecock Corner. The Cresta is still very chauvinistic - women can now participate but they need an invitation from a club member. You can just go and watch of course!

St Moritz recently celebrated 150 years of winter tourism - all started by Brits. In 1864, enterprising Engadin hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bet with four English summer tourists that they would enjoy the sunshine in St Moritz even in winter. If not, he would cover their travel costs. And if winter here didn't appeal to them, they could still stay for as long as they wanted at his expense.

They duly turned up in time for Christmas - and loved it. Herr Badrutt couldn't get rid of them until after Easter - and winter tourism in the Alps was born.

Chesa Veglia

Chesa Veglia

Converted from a historic farmhouse, the Chesa Veglia is a unique meeting point to be enjoyed day or night and is a premiere attraction for VIPs. Sample some of the finest Italian and Swiss cuisine to be had anywhere in the three restaurants and two bars here.

Chesa Veglia’s Pizzeria and Grill maintain the rustic charm and ambience of what were the stables of the farmhouse, as antique wooden decorations create a stunning environment to dine in. It is, however, the diversity of the food here that have made it a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. The Patrizier Stuben serves up Swiss and international specialities, whilst the Grill Chadafo boasts fabulous veal dishes, both of which contrast the Pizzeria nicely.

Wait for your table in the Bar Carigiet - named after a local artist whose works decorate the walls - and embrace the authentic charm of the Engadin mountains in the most wondrous of surroundings. Alternatively, the intimate Polo Bar now stands where the farmhouse’s former smoke room once was and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink to round off an indulgent day.
